Abstract PURPOSE: To reduce an influence exercised on combustion stability by humidity of the atmosphere on a lean operation condition, in a lean burn engine. CONSTITUTION: In a lean burn engine, an exhaust gas recirculation control device for the lean burn engine comprises a target exhaust gas recirculation rate setting means (f) on the lean side to set a target exhaust gas recirculation rate on the lean operation condition to a range where an influence exercised on lean combustion by humidity is removed; and an exhaust gas recirculation means (g) to effect recirculation of exhaust gas to an engine so that an exhaust gas recirculation rate attains a set target value.
