Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst producing a satisfactory effect to the cracking of heavy hydrocarbon and the cracking of light hydrocarbon by using an activat ed clay mineral as an active component and a matrix material and imparting a specified pore volume distribution. CONSTITUTION: An activated clay mineral as an active component (component having mesopores and at least satisfactory function of an acid catalyst) and a matrix material having proper physical properties (pore distribution and rough-cracking function) are used as starting materials and zeolite is further used as an active component if necessary. They are subjected to spray drying, kneading, etc., to obtain the objective catalyst. In this catalyst, the ratio of the volume of pores each having 2-10nm diameter to that of pores to each having <=60nm diameter is regulated to >=0.35. The activated clay mineral preferably has >=150m /g total specific surface area and 2-10nm average pore diameter.
