Summary:PURPOSE: To efficiently produce hydrogen peroxide low in alkalinity by using an electrolytic cell having a cathode compartment, an anode compartment and an intermediate compartment enclosed with the cation-exchange membrane and set between both compartments. CONSTITUTION: An electrolytic cell 1 consists of an anode compartment 30 provided with an anode 31 of Ni sheet, etc., to which a cation-exchange membrane 40 is attached and a cathode compartment 20 provided with a cathode 21 as a porous gas diffusion electrode having a cation-exchange membrane 41 with an intermediate compartment 10 in between. An aq. nonalkaline soln. such as water and dil. sulfuric acid is supplied to the anode compartment 30 from an inlet 32 and discharged from an outlet 33. Meanwhile, an aq. alkaline hydrogen peroxide soln. is supplied to the intermediate compartment 10 from an inlet 11, water or an aq. alkali soln. and an oxygen-contg. gas such as air are supplied to the cathode compartment 20 from inlets 22 and 23, a voltage is impressed between the anode 31 and cathode 21, and electrolysis is conducted. An aq. hydrogen peroxide soln. 12 reduced in alkali is produced from the intermediate compartment 10 and an aq. alkali soln. of hydrogen peroxide as the electrolysis product is produced from the cathode compartment at the same time.
