PURPOSE: To obtain a disinfecting detergent which exhibits a high disinfecting effect even at a low concn., a high detergency, and a chelating capability by using a specific cationic compd. CONSTITUTION: This detergent contains at least one quaternary ammonium salt of formula I [wherein R is 10-18C alkyl or alkenyl; R is H, methyl, or phenoxymethyl; n is 1-3; m is 1-5; and X is a group of formula II (wherein M is H or an alkali metal; and R and R are each -CH2 COOM, hydroxyethyl, or a group of formula III)]. The ammonium salt is obtd. by reacting an amine of formula IV with an aminocarboxylic acid of formula II and reacting the resulting salt with an epoxy compd. of formula V (wherein R is the same as R ). The detergent is usually in the form of an aq. soln. In using it as a disinfectant, the concn. of the salt is pref. 0.02-0.2wt.%; and in using as a disinfecting detergent, the concn. is pref. 0.1-0.5wt.%.
