Abstract PURPOSE: To provide a master/slave shield excavating machine consisting of a master unit and sub-unit, which can excavate a tunnel having differing diameter continuously with the same machine, wherein a simple structure is introduced so that it is practicable to take in the earth and sand excavated by the master cutter head at the time of cooperative excavation of the master and sub units smoothly into a chamber provided in the sub-unit and to prevent collapse of the surrounding natural ground when excavation is made by the sub-unit solely. CONSTITUTION: An earth/sand passage 8c with no inner bottom provided is formed in a master cutter head 8, and an earth/sand take-in space 11c whose peripheral surface is left open and which is in communication with a chamber in a sub-unit is formed in a sub-cutter head 11. A rotation coupling means is furnished which couples the master cutter head 8 with the sub-cutter head 11 so that the earth/sand passage 8c and earth/sand take-in space 11c are in communication.
