Summary:PURPOSE: To control the distribution of an electrolytic reaction and to improve current efficiency at the time of electrolyzing oxygen to obtain an aq. alkaline soln. of hydrogen peroxide by supplying an electrolyte to the anode and cathode in a direction opposite to each other with the ion-exchange membrane in-between. CONSTITUTION: In the production of hydrogen peroxide, an electrolytic cell 50 is separated by an ion-exchange membrane 40 into a cathode compartment 20 and an anode compartment 30. A port 22 for supplying a catholyte 24 and a port 23 for supplying an oxygen-contg. gas 25 are furnished at the upper part of the cathode compartment 20, and a port 26 for discharging the electrolyzed liq. 27 is provided at the lower part. A port 31 for supplying an anolyte 32 is furnished at the lower part of the anode compartment 30, and a discharge port 33 is provided at the upper part. The electrolyte and gaseous oxygen supply ports 22 and 23 and the electrolyzed liq. outlet 26 are vertically reversed in the cathode compartment 20. The electrolyte is independently supplied to the anode 34 and cathode 21. Since the anolyte and catholyte flow countercurrently, the current density is improved. Air, the PSA oxygen freed from carbon dioxide, etc., are appropriately used as the oxygen source.
