Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the reflection type liquid crystal electro-optical element which is used for a timepiece and other portable equipment and practical and makes a sharp, beautiful, and superior color display. CONSTITUTION:The reflection type liquid crystal electro-optical device consists of a scatter mode liquid crystal element 9 which has high transmissivity without using a polarizing plate and a reflecting plate which has a fine uneven pattern formed and spectrally diffuses white light by reflection and diffraction when the white light is made incident. Consequently, the color display can be made in interference colors which are brighter and higher in purity than a color filter system and brightens beautifully on a white ground.
