PURPOSE:To provide an improved method and apparatus which detect water penetration into a pole transformer and pole switchgear by using ultrasonic wave. CONSTITUTION:Regarding a method and an apparatus detecting water penetration into a pole transformer and a pole switchgear by using ultrasonic waves in non-destructive way, the method and the apparatus detect water invasion by a method wherein ultrasonic waves are introduced laterally into the steel bottom plates 3, 4 of a pole transformer or a pole switchgear from a probe 51T for signal transmission at a prescribed angle by an angle beam technique, the reflected waves from the pole transformer or the pole switchgear are received by a probe 51R for signal reception set in the steel bottom plates 3, 4 on the opposite to the probe 51T for signal transmission, and the reflected waves due to the lateral waves from the steel bottom plates 3, 4 among the received reflected waves and the vertical wave reflected waves from the interfaces SI, SA of water and generated due to water invasion are detected and displayed.
