Abstract PURPOSE:To produce an acrylic acid ester having 1,2-diol end group useful as a raw material for synthesis of a coating material, a contact lens, etc., in a high yield in a short time by conducting a hydration reaction in a system composed of a specified acrylic acid ester, water and an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:(A) An acrylic acid ester of formula I [R is H or an alkyl; R is a (substituted) hydrocarbon residue] is subjected to hydration reaction in the presence of (B) an acid such as sulfuric acid, perchloric acid, trifluoroacetic acid or benzenesulfonic acid in (C) a system composed of an organic solvent such as toluene or n-hexane and water to synthesize the objective compound of formula II. In addition, the amount of water used in the component (C) is preferably 0.5 to 10 pts.wt., especially 1 to 5 pts.wt. based on 1 pts.wt. organic solvent.
