Abstract PURPOSE:To efficiently and precisely detect all defects such as irregularity and color shade estimated on a photoreceptor surface. CONSTITUTION:A photoreceptor drum 1 is laid in the counterclockwise rotating state at low speed by a driving device 2, a first high frequency fluorescent lamp 5 is first lighted, the positive reflected light from the drum surface is received by a line sensor 4, and according to the electric signal outputted therefrom, the presence of color shade is detected in an image processing device 7. Further, a second high frequency fluorescent lamp 6 is lighted instead of the first high frequency fluorescent lamp 5, the scattered light from the drum surface is received by a line sensor 4, and according to the electric signal outputted therefrom, the presence of irregularity is detected in an image processing device 7.
