Abstract PURPOSE:To eliminate the operation of a safety valve and prevent the indoor discharge of gas by detecting that the internal pressure of an alkaline battery exceeds a fixed value with an internal pressure sensor, and stopping an automatic charge. CONSTITUTION:When the internal pressure of an alkaline battery 10 exceeds the fixed pressure lower than the release pressure of a safety valve 11, an internal pressure detecting sensor 12 outputs a detection signal. When the signal is sent from the sensor 12, an automatic charge is stopped, the safety valve 11 is not operated, and the gas and alkali in the battery 10 are not discharged indoors or to the outside. The fixed pressure lower than the release pressure is determined in consideration of the internal pressure rise during the period until the chemical reaction and electrochemical reaction are stopped after the charge is stopped. When the internal pressure exceeds the fixed value, a contact SW1 provided in the sensor 12 is turned off, and the automatic charge is stopped.
