Abstract PURPOSE:To produce an austenitic stainless steel for solid electrolyte type fuel cell, having superior oxidation resistance and electric conductivity even in a high temp. oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The austenitic stainless steel has a composition consisting of <=0.15% C, 0.375-4.55% Si, <=3.0% Mn, 15-30% Cr, 20-60% Ni, 2.5-6.0% Al, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities or further containing <=0.5%, in total, of one or more kinds among Y and rare earth elements and satisfying the inequality {Al(%)-1}/4<=Si(%)<=0.8Al(%)-0.25. If necessary, the content of S as an inevitable impurity is regulated to <=0.002% and also the total content of S and O is regulated to <=0.005%.
