Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a pulse lighting type rare gas discharge lamp capable of suppressing the reduction of efficiency even when the filler gas pressure is reduced and having a good starting property. CONSTITUTION:Xenon gas is sealed into a light emitting tube bulb 10 containing a pair of electrodes 13 to form a rare gas discharge lamp 1, pulse voltage is applied to the rare gas discharge lamp 1 to light a pulse lighting type rare gas discharge lamp device, the inner diameter (d) of the bulb is set to 15.0mm or below, the sealed pressure P of xenon gas is set to 5<=P<=30 (Torr), the pulse frequency of the pulse voltage f1 is set to f1=(0.75-1.5)(0.3P+5)15/d, and the duty radio tau is set to 0.05-0.35. The ultraviolet radiation during the rest period can be effectively utilized, and the reduction of the luminous efficiency can be prevented as compared with the conventional one.
