Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition stably providing vulcanized rubber having excellent strength characteristics by specifically treating a mixture of ethylenic unsaturated nitrile-conjugated diene-based copolymer rubber, a zinc compound and methacrylic acid. CONSTITUTION:First, a mixture of (A) 100 pts.wt. of ethylenic unsaturated nitrile-conjugated diene-based copolymer rubber (e.g. acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer rubber), (B) 10-60 pts.wt. of a zinc compound (e.g. zinc oxide) and (C) 10-60 pts.wt. of methacrylic acid is adjusted to <=1wt.% volatile weight loss (namely ratio of weight change obtained by cutting the mixture into 2mm square, heating in an oven at 100 deg.C for one hour). Then the mixture is blended with (D) an organic peroxide (e.g. ducumyl peroxide) in the ratio of preferably 0.5-8 pts.wt. of the component D based on 100 pts.wt. of the component A to give the objective composition. To reduce volatile weight loss to be <=1wt.%, for example, the mixture is put in an oven to vaporize a volatile component.
