PURPOSE:To properly control a transmission gear ratio of a continuously variable transmission on the basis of a control map set to provide always the best control condition. CONSTITUTION:This transmission gear ratio controller is provided with a desired value reading means 18 for reading a desired control value on the basis of a control map having the desired control value set to correspond to the operating condition of an engine and a speed change driving means 12 for controlling the transmission gear ratio of a continuously variable transmission according to the desired control value. Also, the transmission gear ratio controller is provided with a map memory means 17 for storing a control map having the desired control value set on the basis of the operating condition and rate of fuel consumption of an engine as parameters, a rate-of-fuel-consumption calculating means 19 for obtaining the rate of fuel consumption according to the operating condition of the engine and a map renewing means 20 for renewing the control map stored in a map storing means 17 according to the calcutated value of the rate of fuel consumption.
