Abstract PURPOSE:To properly evaluate treatment state for water ot be treated at a high degree by introducing test water to a large test water cell having an optical path length equal to or longer than 50mm, measuring he absorbance of the test water at the specified wavelength with a 6-beam and 4-wavelength system, and converting the density of the test water to a value having a correlationin with the aforesaid measurement. CONSTITUTION:A cell is periodically washed with an automatic washing device 11 and fed with test water (w). A light beam form lamps 2A and 2B passes lenses 3A and 3B, and enters the cell 1, while a part of the beam enters each of comparators 5A, 5A', 5B and 5B'. Thereaftr, the beam is detected with each of detectors 6A, 6A', 6B and 6B'. Output from each detector 6 is added to a corresponding logarithmic amplifier 7, together with output form the compara tor 5 as a counterpart, and becomes an input signal to a signal processor 8 after absorbance conversion. A density conversion operation and processing section 9 converts E260 (254) to organism density, E550 (546) to turbidity, E220 to a nitric ion or nitrate nitrogen and E370 to chromaticity, respectively.
