Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain sure joining without causing rupture on a joining part of billets during rolling by abutting a rear end part of a billet conveyed ahead on a tip part of a succeeding billet, impressing an alternating field and heating thereon. CONSTITUTION:When the alternating field running in the perpendicular direction of sheet bars is impressed on a butt contact area (a) between the rear end part of a preceding sheet bar 2 and the tip part of a succeeding sheet bar 3 by an alternating field generating coil 5, an eddy current circulating along the perpendicular direction of the sheet bars is carried to the respective end part and tip part of the sheet bars 2 and 3 and further, a current which is made to the same phase as the eddy current is carried between electrodes 6a and 6a. The temperature of the contact face rises by Joule heating by resistance on the contact area (a). The contact area is adhered and joined together efficiently in a very short time by pressing one of the sheet bars 2 and 3 toward the sheet bar to be joined while executing heating and raising the temperature in this contact state.
