Abstract PURPOSE:To alloy the simultaneous compensation of a phase difference and optically rotatory dispersion with one sheet of film and to eliminate the interference colors generated by formation of a TFT-LCD to a lower cell gap by constituting the above compensation plate psing a high-polymer liquid crystal obtained by immobilizing a twisted nematic orientation structure. CONSTITUTION:This compensation plate is constituted of the film consisting of the liquid crystalline high polymer which is oriented as a twisted nematic crystal in a liquid crystal state and attains a glassy state at the liquid crystal transition point or below. The molecules constituting the film consisting of the liquid crystalline high polymer has the spiral structure having the spiral axes and the twist angle thereof is in a 70 to 150 deg. range. The produce DELTAn.d of the double refraction DELTAn and thickness (d) of the film consisting of the liquid crystalline high polymer is in a 0.2 to 3.0mum range. Both of the phase difference and the optical rotatory dispersion are simultaneously compensated with one sheet of the film and the interference colors generated dne to lower cell gap of the liquid crystal display element TFT-LCD of a active matrix type can be eliminated.
