PURPOSE:To allow data to be printed laterally by providing an image direction switching device which activates a landscape setting device if an image width designated by an image width designation device is interpreted by a sheet size detection device to be larger than the lateral width of a sheet size. CONSTITUTION:A command which seeks the size of a sheet which is set in a printer by an emulation program is sent, and the sheet size selected by a printer currently in response to the command is written in a UT buffer 312. Then if the code conversion process by a right margin setting command in the user's process takes place at the beginning of an image on the first page, the sheet size set by the printer currently is read. Further, this sheet size is compared with an image size designated by the emulation program. In addition, if the image size is larger than the lateral width of a sheet, a landscape setting device sends a designation command to a VR buffer 306 and sets an image size at the right margin.
