Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide of a small propagation loss by providing a superlattice layer consisting of elements constituting a group II-VI compd. layer between the group II-VI compd. layer and a silicon substrate. CONSTITUTION:The superlattice layer 104 consisting of the elements constituting the group II-VI compd. is provided between the silicon substrate 101 and the group II-VI compd. at the time of growing the group II-VI compd. as a nonlinear optical crystal 102 on the silicon substrate 101. Then, the superlattice layer 104 acts as a buffer layer to the mismatching of the lattice constants of the silicon substrate 101 and the group II-VI compd. and suppresses the generation of crystal defects in the group II-VI compd. layer 102. The nonlinear optical crystal layer of the low propagation loss is formed in this way and the optical waveguide having the small propagation loss is obtd.
