Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain specified magnetic output of a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer and a shielding layer independent of thickness of the shielding layer by specifying the residual magnetic flux density of the magnetic layer to >=2,000 emu/cm . CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer 2 and a shielding layer 5 which completely hides the color phase of the magnetic layer 2. The residual magnetic flux density of the magnetic layer 2 is specified to >=2,000 emu/cm . Namely, by limiting the residual magnetic flux density of the magnetic layer 2 to a specified range independent of thickness of the shielding layer 5, specified magnetic output can be obtained. Thereby, thickness of spacing loss which is determined by the shielding layer 5 can be freely selected and the medium can be formed according to various designs without reducing recording density characteristics.
