Abstract PURPOSE:To economically produce a carbon product having a high gas-adsorbing ability by retaining a crushed wooden material in a combustion furnace in a floating state, carbonizing the wooden material with a larger amount of air than a theoretical amount at a specific temperature for a specified time and subsequently cooling the carbonized product under an air-fred condition. CONSTITUTION:A wooden material, preferably low specific density wood, barks or scrap wood from a wood factory, etc., is crushed with a crusher, etc., into pieces having a length of 5-7cm and the maximum cross-sectional area of approximately 10cm in the longitudinal direction. The wooden material is sent on a stoker 3 in a combustion furnace with a feeder 1, pushed up from the stoker 3 with air supplied by a fan 11 for the first air and decomposed and burnt in a floated or fluidized state. The carbonization process is performed under conditions that the total amount of the first air and other air sent in the furnace as necessary is above the theoretical amount of the air required for the combustion and the temperature in the furnace and the residence time of the wooden material are >=600 deg.C, preferably 800-1,000 deg.C, and within 20min, respectively. The carbonized charcoal is cooled together with the burnt gases in a heat exchanger 6, collected with a cyclone 8 and cooled in a water tank 9 under an air-free condition to provide a carbon product.
