Abstract To provide a manufacturing method of forming a plurality of areas having different orientation directions (orientation division) and thereby easily forming a VA mode liquid crystal display element excellent in field of view angle.SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of multi-domain liquid crystal orientation film includes: a step of applying on a substrate liquid crystal orientation agent that contains polymer including optical orientation group and thermal cross-linking group A as component (A) and solvent, and satisfies at least one of the following Z1 and Z2, to form a cured film; a first irradiation step of irradiating the cured film with ultraviolet from an oblique direction; and a second irradiation step of irradiating the cured film subjected to the ultraviolet irradiation with ultraviolet from a direction different from the first irradiation step, in this order. At least one of the irradiation steps is performed via a mask including a light-shielded area and a not light-shielded area. Z1: the component (A) further contains thermal cross-linking group B.
