Abstract To provide a safety switching device, in particular for reliable switching-on of an electrical load.SOLUTION: During a starting process, functionality of, e.g., two not forcibly driven changeover switches (60, 70), particularly their normally closed contacts (63, 73), can be monitored without using a microcontroller. The normally closed contacts (63, 73) are arranged in respective separate diagnostic circuits (30, 31), which are connected in parallel with respect to a test voltage. The diagnostic circuits (30, 31) are each monitored by a diagnostic current detection device (40, 50).
