To provide a knock type writing instrument having a knock mechanism that operates more reliably.SOLUTION: The knock type writing instrument 1 includes a barrel 4, a refill 6 arranged in the barrel, a spring 7 for urging the refill rearward, a plurality of outer cams 20, a knock member 30 having a cam surface 32 provided with a plurality of first peaks 33 and first valleys 34 on its front end surface, and a rotor 40 having a cam receiving surface 42 provided with a plurality of second peaks 43 and second valleys 44 on its rear end surface and configured to cooperate with the outer cams and the cam surface. When the cam surface presses the cam receiving surface, the rotor is rotated, and the writing state and the non-writing state can be switched.
