Summary:To reduce scorch unevenness while restricting damage to heater materials.SOLUTION: A liquid discharge device comprises: a liquid discharge head which includes heater elements for generating energy required for discharging liquid, a first protective layer for blocking contact between the heater elements and the liquid, a second protective layer which partially covers the first protective layer and functions as a first electrode, a second electrode electrically connected to the first electrode via the liquid, and a discharge port for discharging the liquid; and control means for controlling setting so that a potential difference between a potential of the first electrode and a potential of the second electrode is a predetermined value, by varying the potential of at least one out of the first electrode and the second electrode.
