Abstract | To provide a sliding member that protects an area near the surface from internal damage, surface damage and softening damage and has an outermost surface uniformly formed with low friction and high durability against high bearing stress.SOLUTION: A sliding member has a surface layer formed on the outer surface region of a base material. The surface layer comprises a nitrided layer that contains iron nitride having a nitrogen concentration of 5.9% to 11.1% on a mass basis, and also comprises a cured layer that is positioned closer to the base material than the nitrided layer. The nitrided layer constitutes the outermost surface; and the nitrogen content is uniform at least in the outermost surface.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
