Abstract | To provide a variable magnification optical system which is downsized and has good optical performance, and an imaging apparatus comprising the variable magnification optical system.SOLUTION: A variable magnification optical system comprises: a first lens group having positive refractive power, a plurality of lens groups, and a final lens group having positive refractive power arranged in order from the object side to the image side. Upon changing of magnification, a distance between the first lens group and a lens group located on the most object side, of the plurality of lens groups changes, all distances between all adjacent lens groups of the plurality of lens groups change, and a distance between a lens group located on the most image side, of the plurality of lens groups and the final lens group change.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
