Abstract To provide a method of controlling an ignition coil suppressed in power consumption and heating.SOLUTION: A method of controlling an ignition coil for an internal combustion engine includes (A) a step of making a predetermined reference energization time T become energization time ta of a primary current of the ignition coil, (B) a step of measuring time tr since the primary current starts to flow until the dropping of power supply voltage of the ignition coil stops while flowing the primary current to the ignition coil during the energization time ta, and (C) a step of updating the energization time ta on the basis of the time tr until the dropping of the power supply voltage stops and the reference energization time T decided from an operation condition of the internal combustion engine at the next energization of the primary current.
