Abstract To make it possible to simplify maintenance work of an exposure unit and prevent damage to the exposure unit during the maintenance work.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus has an exposure device that is movably disposed and exposes an image carrier, and a lock mechanism that locks to immobilize the exposure device at a lock position that is set to be a predetermined position in a moving direction. When a predetermined cover member of a housing surrounding an apparatus main body is removed from a housing main body, the lock mechanism is allowed to lock the exposure device. When the predetermined cover member of the housing is removed from the housing main body, the lock mechanism is allowed to lock the exposure device, and thereby maintenance work of the exposure unit can be simplified. Since the maintenance work is not performed in a wrong way, damage to the exposure unit can be prevented during the maintenance work.
