Abstract | To provide a technique that can use a multi-electrode submerged arc welder for welding a thick plate and can perform gas-shield arc-welding without using a flux, without substantially changing a welding condition that is used in the multi-electrode submerged arc-welding.SOLUTION: An arc welder, which arc-welds a thick steel plate whose thickness is 10 mm or more using a plurality of electrode wires, has a passage for shield gas provided between the electrode wires and a nozzle and means for cooling the nozzle, and further comprises a plurality of torches for arc-welding which delivers the electrode wire whose diameter is 3.2-4.0 mm closest to a weld progressing direction of the plurality of electrode wires and the other electrode wires whose diameters are 3.2-6.4 mm, in which the torch closest to the weld-progressing direction is inclined, at 0<θ<30°, from a direction perpendicular to the steel plate toward the weld-progressing direction and electrode currents can be set to 500 A or higher, where the maximum control current is 600 A or more and the maximum control voltage is 50 V or more.
