Abstract To provide an image processing apparatus that can reduce occurrence of an image defect caused by positional displacement between an upper layer image and a foundation image.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus comprises: a processing unit that performs image processing in forming an upper layer image and a foundation image that is the foundation of the upper layer image superimposed on the same recording medium through a plurality of times of image formation; and a specification unit that specifies the foundation image based on input image data.
