Abstract To provide an image forming apparatus.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 100 comprises: a transfer unit 5; an image forming unit 4; a conveying mechanism 11; a detection unit 111; a determination unit 65; and a first regulation unit 66. The transfer unit 5 transfers an image to a recording medium P. The image forming unit 4 includes an intermediate transfer belt 47. The image forming unit 4 forms an image in a predetermined area P2 of the intermediate transfer belt 47. The image forming unit 4 moves the predetermined area P2 toward the transfer unit 5. The conveying mechanism 11 conveys the recording medium P to the transfer unit 5. The detection unit 111 is arranged on a conveyance path L. The detection unit 111 is arranged such that the time to convey the recording medium P from the detection unit 111 to the transfer unit 5 becomes a first time. The detection unit 111 detects the recording medium P. The determination unit 65 determines whether the detection unit 111 detects the recording medium P at the time point when the image forming unit 4 starts formation of an image.
