Abstract | To appropriately make a feature part of an object shape apparent.SOLUTION: In this technique, a surface of a CAD model is discretized into a mesh grid, faces surrounded with discrete points are arranged to reproduce an object shape of the CAD model, an expanded model or a reduced model of the object shape of the CAD model is generated by moving each of the faces in its normal direction, a potential distribution on a surface of the expanded model or the reduced model is obtained by solving a Laplace equation for an electrostatic field on the surface based on a boundary element method on the assumption that the surface of the expanded model or the reduced model is electrified with uniform charge, and a feature part of the object shape is detected on the basis of the obtained potential distribution.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
