Abstract To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display device that has a high degree of freedom of design, which allows miniaturization and can ensure the brightness of an image.SOLUTION: A first transparent member 12 is arranged between a reflection type liquid crystal display panel 2 and a polarization beam splitter 15, and a first refraction film 10 is formed on a second surface 12b of the first transparent member 12 that faces the polarization beam splitter 15. A main beam of linearly polarized light (P-wave) incident on the inside of the first transparent member 12 from a first surface 12a of the first transparent member 12 is not totally reflected on a boundary surface between the first refraction film 10 and a lower air layer 14a and is refracted toward a light transmission/reflection surface of the polarization beam splitter 15.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】画像の輝度を確保しつつ小型化することが可能な設計の自由度が高い反射型液晶表示装置を提供する。【解決手段】反射型液晶表示パネル2と偏光ビームスプリッター15との間に第一の透明部材12を配置し、偏光ビームスプリッター15と対向する第一の透明部材12の第二の面12bに第一の屈折膜10を形成する。第一の透明部材12の第一の面12aから第一の透明部材12の内部へ入射した直線偏光(P波)の主光束は、第一の屈折膜10と下部空気層14aとの境界面で全反射されずに、偏光ビームスプリッター15の光透過反射面に向かって屈折する。【選択図】図1
