Abstract To provide a card reader and its foreign matter detection method capable of detecting foreign matter by using an electrostatic capacity sensor in the card reader in which an influence of a movable member can be reduced over a wide range and a cost can be reduced.SOLUTION: An opening/closing circuit for dividing an electrostatic capacity sensor into a plurality of areas each of which can detect electrostatic capacitance and electrically connecting and disconnecting the respective areas is provided.
