Abstract | To provide a card reader and its foreign matter detection method capable of detecting foreign matter by using an electrostatic capacity sensor in the card reader in which an influence of a movable member can be reduced over a wide range and a cost can be reduced.SOLUTION: An opening/closing circuit for dividing an electrostatic capacity sensor into a plurality of areas each of which can detect electrostatic capacitance and electrically connecting and disconnecting the respective areas is provided. At least one of the plurality of areas, for example, at least one of remaining areas is arranged at a position susceptible to a movable structure in a position which is not easily influenced by the movable structure in a card reader.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
