Abstract To provide a method and system of generating haptic effects using an active matrix.SOLUTION: The method includes detecting a user input on a device and then, in response to that user input, determining a location in an active matrix comprising a plurality of actuation areas where a haptic effect is to be produced. The method then activates an actuation area within the active matrix at the determined location and produces a haptic effect at the determined location. The system includes a device with a sensor configured to detect an input, an active matrix, and a haptic generator. The active matrix is coupled to a surface of the device and includes multiple actuation areas.
