Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and running durability.SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium according to the present invention includes a non-magnetic support medium and a magnetic layer containing magnetic particles, in which a length of magnetization in a width direction of the magnetic layer, which is a length of magnetization of a signal recorded in the magnetic layer, is 1 μm or less, the magnetic particles are composed of ε-iron oxide having an average particle size of 15 nm or less, a squareness ratio in a thickness direction of the magnetic layer is 0.65 or more, and, when L is the average thickness of a surface mixed layer formed on the surface of the magnetic layer opposite to the nonmagnetic support side, it becomes 4 nm≤L≤8 nm.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
