Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make common a constitution in transmitting and receiving units used in a bidirectional optical transmission device.SOLUTION: A bidirectional optical transmission device 10 comprises optical waveguide elements 1a and 1b and a polarization maintaining optical fiber 6 for connecting them to each other. The optical waveguide elements 1a and 1b have substrates 2a and 2b, optical transmitting parts 3a and 3b, optical receiving parts 4a and 4b, and polarization multiplexing/demultiplexing parts 5a and 5b, respectively.
