Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid undesired formation of waviness and glossiness differences between lacquer-coated image areas and lacquer-coated non-image areas.SOLUTION: A material to be printed 10 has a coating 11 with at least one acid 11a. After printing with an ink 21 and supplying a liquid 31, a water-containing further liquid 41 such as a lacquer is supplied both to image line regions 20 and non-image line regions 30 of the material to be printed 10. The liquid 31 and/or the further liquid 41 contain at least one substance 31a for at least partly neutralizing the acid 11a.
