Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control unit and a vehicle control method capable of suppressing a driver from feeling that a brake force is insufficient when the driver decelerates a vehicle during free running.SOLUTION: In vehicle control processing in one embodiment of the present invention, an ECU 200 increases the increase rate of a target turbine rotating speed Nttgt when the negative pressure of a brake booster 73 is low as compared with a case in which the negative pressure is high, thereby increasing the increase rate of clutch torque Tc. It is thereby possible to suppress a driver from feeling that a brake force is insufficient when the driver operates a brake pedal 71 during free running. If the brake force possibly falls short of a target value even by increasing the increase rate of the clutch torque Tc, a CVT 5 may be downshifted. By downshifting the CVT 5, the rotating speed of the CVT 5 increases and the inertial torque thereof can be added to the brake force.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
