Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform high-accuracy position detection using a magnetoresistance effect element such as TMR element.SOLUTION: A position detector comprises at least two magnetic detection elements 21-1, 21-2 that detect a magnetic leakage from a scale 11 on which a magnetic signal is magnetically recorded and output a recording signal of a position where the magnetic leakage is detected. The at least two magnetic detection elements 21-1, 21-2 are arranged in a direction y orthogonal to a direction x in which the scale 11 is scanned, and are arranged in positions substantially equally distanced from a magnetic signal recording surface of the scale 11. 【課題】TMR素子のような磁気抵抗効果素子を使用して、精度の高い位置検出を行う。【解決手段】磁気信号が磁気記録されたスケール11からの漏洩磁気を検出し、漏洩磁気を検出した位置の記録信号を出力する、少なくとも2個の磁気検出素子21−1,21−2を備える。少なくとも2個の磁気検出素子21−1,21−2は、スケール11を走査する方向xと直交した方向yに並べて配置されると共に、スケール11の磁気信号記録面からの距離がほぼ等しい位置に配置される。【選択図】図2
