Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch a combustion mode to lean combustion from stoichiometric combustion without generating a variation of torque in an internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: When two conditions are satisfied that a combustion mode is switched to stoichiometric combustion from lean combustion by receiving a requirement for increasing a required torque, and that a difference between the required torque and estimated torque which is estimated from an air amount sucked into a cylinder is not smaller than a prescribed value, a target air-fuel ratio is switched to a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio from a lean air-fuel ratio, and the required torque is temporarily lowered to the estimated torque, and after that, the internal combustion engine is controlled so that the lowered estimated torque is gradually changed toward the required torque. 【課題】内燃機関にトルクの変動を生じさせることなく、ストイキ燃焼からリーン燃焼へ燃焼モードを切り替える。【解決手段】要求トルクの増大要求を受けてリーン燃焼からストイキ燃焼へ燃焼モードを切り替える条件と、要求トルクと筒内に吸入される空気量から推定される推定トルクとの差が所定値以上である条件とが満たされた場合に、目標空燃比をリーン空燃比からストイキ空燃比に切り替えると共に要求トルクを推定トルクまで一時的に低下させ、その後低下させた目標トルクを要求トルクへ向かって徐変させるように内燃機関を制御する。【選択図】図5
