Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a difference in illuminating characteristics due to a difference in position of between document reading surfaces.SOLUTION: A document illuminating device 1 includes: contact glass 2; an automatic document conveying mechanism 3; and an illuminating unit 4 that can illuminate a document reading area 8 at a first document reading position 6 relative to a document 5 placed on a top face of the contact glass 2 and at a second document reading position 7 relative to the document 5 conveyed while being floated from the top face of the contact glass 2 by the automatic document conveying mechanism 3. Illumination characteristics of the illuminating unit 4 is set and arranged to be optimal at a middle point between the first document reading position 6 on the top face of the contact glass 2 and the second document reading position 7 where the document 5 is conveyed by the automatic document conveying mechanism 3.
