Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure control method and a device of an electric power steering system capable of preventing a momentary loss of a steering assist force and degradation in stability in steering in the case of a failure of the electric power steering system caused by a shift to a manual mode.SOLUTION: A failure control method of an electric power steering system includes: an abnormal signal monitoring step of monitoring a first torque sensor signal and a second torque sensor signal; a safety mode operating step of controlling to halve a steering assist force when an abnormal signal of one of the torque sensor signals is detected; and a manual mode operating step of controlling the steering assist force to be completely lost when an abnormal signal is detected in the other torque sensor signal in which any abnormal signal has not been detected.
