Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a driving system of a diesel-electric railcar, which has good fuel efficiency and high acceleration performance without a battery installed.SOLUTION: A vehicle control system includes: a plurality of engines; a plurality of generators driven by the engines; a plurality of converters which convert AC power output by the generators into DC power; and a plurality of inverters which convert the DC power into AC power to drive motors; wherein only an engine corresponding to a load among the plurality of engines is controlled, and only the necessary number of engines in stop state of the plurality of engines are started prior to a notch operation.
