Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating an internal combustion engine and the internal combustion engine for reducing the quantity of nitrogen oxides discharged from the internal combustion engine especially even when an exhaust gas purification device does not have an operation parameter necessary and required to perfectly convert the nitrogen dioxides. SOLUTION: For the method of operating an internal combustion engine (1), the internal combustion engine (1) includes an exhaust gas purification device (7) for purifying exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine (1), and the internal combustion engine is operated at a first ignition angle in normal operation. At that time, when the exhaust gas purification device (7) cannot convert or only partially convert at least one of exhaust gas components, especially nitrogen oxides, existing in the exhaust gas due to a loading condition thereof, the content of the nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas is reduced by at least temporary operation of the internal combustion engine at a second ignition angle of a delay angle.
