Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document illumination device and image reading apparatus for achieving high illuminance illumination without enlargement. SOLUTION: A first document illumination unit 4 and a second document illumination unit 7 are arranged so that LED (Light Emitting Diode) illumination light sources 2 and 5 and light guide members 3 and 6 are mirror-symmetrically in a sub-scanning direction with respect to the center line A-A' of the sub-scanning direction of a document reading region. In the first document illumination unit 4 and the second document illumination unit 7, a multi-chip LED 1 of each of LED illumination light sources 2 and 5 is arranged so that the illumination light L points downward. Then, inside the first light guide member 3 and the second light guide member 6, the illumination lights of both document illumination units 4 and 7 are reflected so as to overlap on a document reading surface 9.
