Abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing an organic radical compound (4-Phosphonooxy-TEMPO) to be used for an electrochromic device, and to provide an electrochromic device using the compound. SOLUTION: The 4-phosphonooxy-TEMPO is synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxy-TEMPO with phosphoryl chloride or phosphoryl bromide in an organic solvent in the presence of a basic compound, followed by reacting with water. An electrochromic device 10 is equipped with: a display electrode structure 11 including a first support substrate 1, a first transparent electrode 2 and a first porous electrode 4; a counter electrode structure 12 including a second support substrate 6, a second transparent electrode 7 and a second porous electrode 8; and an electrolytic layer 5 held between the both structures, wherein an electrochromic compound 3 is deposited on the first porous electrode 4, the 4-phosphonooxy-TEMPO (13) is deposited on the second porous electrode 8, and reversible coloring and decolorizing by the electrochromic compound is carried out by controlling a voltage to be applied between the first and second transparent electrodes.
