Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the brake of a press, which method can stably stop the press at its upper dead point every cycle, and further to provide a mechanical press. SOLUTION: In the mechanical press comprising an eccentric shaft ES, a flywheel FW connected to the eccentric shaft ES, and a brake B for stopping the rotation of the eccentric shaft ES, the timing for operating the brake B is adjusted based on the forming energy E necessary fot forming. If the forming energy E, which largely fluctuates for every cycle, among the energy to be discharged from the flywheel FW is grasped, the rotation angle of the eccentric shaft ES from the operation of the brake to the stop of the eccentric shaft ES can be accurately estimated.
